TOTAL FIRE BAN DECLARED!

Jan 8, 2016

The Otago Rural Fire Authority has issued a total fire ban across the Otago region.

They have declared camp fires, fireworks, bonfires, rubbish fires, braziers, flying lanterns and outdoor incinerators banned.

"It will be no surprise to Otago residents that the region is drying out," says principal rural fire officer Stephanie Rotarangi.

"There is now a high risk of fires escaping due to a combination of dry conditions and significant fuel."

The fire ban applies to the Lakes, Central, Coastal and Clutha Zones of Otago and all existing fire permits will be revoked.

Fire permits will be considered by the Otago Rural Fire Authority for emergency situations and if conditions allow. "It will take substantial and sustained rain to provide a respite," Ms Rotarangi.

The Fire Authority will advise the public when the total fire ban is to be lifted.
