CATALYST - Three waves of Whakatipu Maori
Sep 1, 2021 - 6:00pm to 7:30pm
Three waves of Whakatipu Maori
Join us for this Catalyst Kōrero with Queenstown kaumatua Darren Rewi.
Maori first came to the Whakatipu basin some 900 years ago. Darren will tell us of the three waves of iwi migrating south into the Whakatipu and the place names and stories they brought with them to honour their ancestors. The resultant narrative layers that lie in our landscape also weave into the story of Ngai Tahu gaining mana whenua, or tribal authority, over much of the South Island.
Registration required and opens on our Eventbrite page a month prior. Koha collected at the door will be given to Mana Tahuna Charitable Trust.
