Civil Defence Advice Wednesday 22nd October
Oct 25, 2025
Kia ora everyone,
I'm sure most of you will be aware that there is a pretty terrible forecast for the next couple of days and lake and river levels are already high. Our local Civil Defence crew have asked us to send out the following message:
Hi Glenorchy,
As we move into the weekend, we have more weather coming our way and heavy rain forecast in the next 48 hours.
Emergency management Otago have forecast the lower sections of Glenorchy potentially subject to flooding.
The Civil Defence Team are watching a potential scenario:
1. Current lagoon level is close to first alert level
2. Heavy rain forecast overnight Wednesday and into Thursday and Friday 24 October
3. Lake level may not drain adequately
We recommend revisiting your preparations for wet weather and isolation.
At this time, please refrain from using the Lagoon walkway, consider it closed.
If you are in vulnerable areas and need to relocate but are short on options, please reach out to us over email GlenorchyCRG@gmail.com
Keep yourself informed:
* ORC have a data portal with river flow and lake level information available on their website - https://envdata.orc.govt.nz/AQWebPortal
* The Civil Defence team use the GY Community Response Facebook group for communication
* You can also join Otago Gets Ready for Civil Defence updates -https://commbase.nz/join/otago
If you have any questions, we are endeavoring to keep an eye on the email over the next few days. Please remember we're all volunteers and in an emergency always dial 111.
