CATALYST KORERO -The Second Quantum Revolution

Dec 1, 2025 - 6:00pm to 7:30pm

The Second Quantum Revolution, Prof David Hutchinson, Monday December 1

The first quantum revolution (1950s – 70s) underpinned the semiconductor industry – your
computer, your phone, your TV. The second revolution, happening now, is anticipated to
bring innovative commercial applications and new ways to address global societal
challenges like climate change.
It also poses risks to societal values, raises policy challenges for both national governments
and international bodies, and has significant national security implications, says quantum
physicist and Otago University physics Professor David Hutchinson.
He returns to Queenstown just over a decade after he first talked quantum with Catalyst
Trust, to describe the physics – “a beautiful triumph of understanding, yielding insight into
the way the world really behaves” – and give a glimpse of what is to come.
David is Departmental Science Advisor to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and
Employment (MBIE) and former director of the Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and
Quantum Technologies.
Monday, December 1, 6-7.30pm at The Rees Hotel Queenstown’s Ruma Wai Kahu.
Registration required HERE to ensure your seat. Please donate online or bring cash for
your koha. This will be given to Wakatipu High School’s Science Buskers Academy.

Venue: The Rees Hotel
