How to get there
The spectacular drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy is one of the world’s Top 10 scenic drives, following the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
The 46 kilometre, 45 mins - 1hour lakeside drive offers breath-taking views of shimmering waters, hanging valleys, glaciers, islands and sheer-sided mountains. It first grabs your attention around Bob's Cove and White Point, but when you arrive at Bennett's Bluff, the desire to leave the vehicle and take in the scene at the head of the lake is irresistible.
Rent a vehicle or a bicycle, catch a bus from Queenstown, or book a tour and be guided through the area. The choice is yours for getting around but just be sure to allow time to enjoy great scenery, great food and great company.
If you are traveling independently by car:
There is only ONE road to Glenorchy. Follow the direction signs through Queenstown leading you to Glenorchy. At the last Queenstown roundabout (called ONE MILE) continue on the well signposted 46km road to the head of the Lake Wakatipu.
For those of you who are taking their time to admire the scenery we strongly urge you - FOR YOUR SAFETY AND THAT OF OTHERS - to find SAFE PULL-IN AREAS to stop and take your photographs. The locals will really appreciate your courtesy if you are driving slowly to pull over whenever possible and let them pass!!
