CATALYST - Three waves of Whakatipu Maori

Sep 1, 2021 - Sep 2, 2021 - 6:00pm to 7:30pm

Three waves of Whakatipu Maori

Join us for this Catalyst Kōrero with Queenstown kaumatua Darren Rewi.

Maori first came to the Whakatipu basin some 900 years ago.  Darren will tell us of the three waves of iwi migrating south into the Whakatipu and the place names and stories they brought with them to honour their ancestors. The resultant narrative layers that lie in our landscape also weave into the story of Ngai Tahu gaining mana whenua, or tribal authority, over much of the South Island.

Local kaumatua Darren Rewi is now going to give his Catalyst kōrero on Māori immigration into the Whakatipu twice, as our first event was booked out in less than a week.

Also, if you are coming and would like to join in the waiata we will sing to thank Darren at the end of the event, here is a U-tube link to the music and lyrics. We have chosen one that many of you might already know.

Registration required on our Eventbrite page. Koha collected at the door will be given to Mana Tahuna Charitable Trust.
