Summer Newsletter 2018

It has been a beautiful summer here in Glenorchy with the warm weather, and yet we are very grateful to have the cooler climate back and a bit of dampness in the air. We are excited about the progress being made with the construction of Camp Glenorchy, and are pleased to let you know we will officially open our doors to the public in March. At last, we will be offering accommodations in our cabins with ensuites and providing single bunk beds in our Bunk Huts, as well as caravan spaces for trampers and travelers. We wish to invite you to help us celebrate this milestone in March.

Camp Glenorchy Opens with a Community Celebration 15 March 2018

We want to make sure you, as members of the Glenorchy community, mark Thursday 15 March on your calendars, so you can join us for a tour and celebration of the completed buildings. We will be hosting our Community Open House and BBQ from 5pm-8pm on 15 March, to say thank you for your support, your input and ideas, and most importantly your patience, as we worked through all the challenges of building Camp Glenorchy (which for some reason, did take much longer than we intended).

We would be thrilled if you could join us for this BBQ and celebration in our Scheelite Campfire Shelter (designed by our own local artist Dan Kelly) from 5pm-8pm – on Thursday 15 March.  You will have the opportunity to see artwork from several local artists in our community, as many details in the buildings have been created by talent here in Glenorchy. If you’d like to come along please RSVP to Community@CampGlenorchy.co.nz by 2 March.

During the month of March the celebration will continue with a series of fun and inspiring educational workshops.  Many of these will be led by members of our local community and will be held in our new Homestead Building at Camp Glenorchy.

This will give you a chance to see how our big classroom, the Humboldt Room, feels and can be used for different events.  For example a yoga class, a meditation class, a photography workshop, cooking class etc will be included.  More details about these free classes will be coming your way in a calendar of events, as soon  as they are all confirmed next week. Look for these workshops on our website and Facebook page.

The Homestead Building is Coming to Life!

Picture1

The details of our main building are developing and really coming to life with several artists and craftspeople adding their touches to the walls, floors and interior artistry of the space.  To the left is the metal work of Andrew Missen from Wellington, who created our sliding barn door from old car body parts.  Our construction team, led by Neil Bone, was proud after getting this large recycled metal door installed at the entry into the Humboldt Room.

Amanda Hasselman’s gorgeous Mt Alfred Braided River textile artwork is now on display in our reception area along with several other art pieces created by Amanda.  Corinne Davis is completing the details on her delightful and humorous hayloft mural, which will hang inside the recycled barn doors, up in our loft, above the community kitchen.

Matt Hood has been busy creating a vibrant interior wall of the Humboldt Room, our meeting space, with reclaimed and re-purposed timbers from wool sheds that were taken down around the South Island.  His detailed wood work is giving beauty to our Humboldt Classroom.  Landscape artist Jeffrey Bale continues to build on his braided river concept throughout the project with pathways into buildings and adding his decorative stone mosaic work throughout the site.

Old World Craft at Camp Glenorchy

Hilton Ellingham is artfully hand-carving signage made from old recycled planks and repurposed wood.  His large art panels are popping up around Camp Glenorchy, adding beauty, personality and old world charm to each of our Cabin and Bunk Hut exteriors.  The cabins have been named after native plants and flowers, and each sign highlights the specific plant.  Hilton has carved a work of art for each cabin, as well as all of our buildings on site.

News from Mrs Woolly’s General Store

Thank you!

We’ve just come to the close of our three-day ‘Great Glenorchy Garage Sale’ over Waitangi weekend. We really appreciate you coming to share in our end of season bargains, and as always we are grateful for your support of Mrs Woolly’s.

Winter Closure Shortens

We know that closing for maintenance inside Mrs Woolly’s General Store in winter can be inconvenient for many of you, so this year we’ve shortened that period by two weeks. We will close Friday 1 June and we’ll then re-open at 10am on Monday 18 June. And some good news: you’ll still be able to get your coffee and pastry fix from Mrs Woolly’s Activity Hut from 7am daily.

New Takeaway Foods

We asked for feedback on our foods and got some great ideas.  Stop by and try a few brand new fresh-to-go items including our chef-made beef chipotle and falafel soft tacos, cabbage salad with citrus aioli, and a new ham-off-the-bone sandwich.  We’re always keen to hear your ideas, so watch for our customer survey coming soon.  Please take time to let us know what you think, so we can better serve you.

Valentine’s Day

Picture6If you are one of those people who love a little romance in your life, or you want to give a heartful gift to someone whom you appreciate, keep Mrs Woolly’s in mind for that special gift.  You can show your appreciation with an offering of jewellery, handbag, scarf, tasty chocolate treat, garden tool or outdoor gear.  With the warmth of summer, you may want to present them with a gift certificate for a Full Monty Gelato Ice Cream, to enjoy during this warmer weather.

We’re Hiring!

Picture7Mrs Woolly’s General Store is on the look-out for Retail Assistants and a Grocery Manager with a passion for great customer service. If this sounds like you, or someone you know, please send your CV and a cover letter to jobs@TheHeadwaters.co.nz.

Erma Has Landed!

Picture7A

In another few weeks the landscape around Erma will be filled in with native plants and shrubs, as she sits as the centre feature inside one of our constructed wetlands.  The wetlands will be cleaning our grey water and storm water, so that it can be reused on site.

Lifting Erma into place outside the Homestead Building is Campbell Wheeler (left) and Jamarl Hansen (right).

We’ll be in Glenorchy until the first week of April and are looking forward to seeing you either for a ‘sneak peek’ visit to Camp Glenorchy, or a catch-up in Mrs Woolly’s General Store.  We really hope you will join us on 15 March from 5pm-8pm to celebrate the opening of Camp Glenorchy.

Thank you again for your ongoing support.
