WOMENS FLY-FISHING FORUM

Sep 3, 2023

A day of fun, fishing, and female camaraderie is on the horizon as we announce the first annual Women’s Fly-Fishing Forum on September 9, 2023. The event, scheduled to coincide with International Women’s Fly-Fishing Day, is being organised by the Wakatipu Anglers Club (WAC). Designed to celebrate women in fly fishing and promote the sport to more women, it will take place at the Queenstown Events Centre from 10am to 2pm.

Fly fishing is more than just a pastime; it is an opportunity to connect with nature, find inner peace, and engage in a community of like-minded enthusiasts. However, this empowering sport has long been dominated by male anglers. This event seeks to change this dynamic by celebrating the achievements of women in the sport and inviting more women to explore the joy and serenity that fly fishing offers.

“We’re excited to bring together women from all walks of life in this celebration of female participation in fly fishing,” said WAC co-President, John Schuitemaker. “It’s not just about fishing, it’s about building a community, fostering self-confidence, and encouraging women to step out of their comfort zones and into a lifetime sport.”

The Women’s Fly Fishing Forum is open to both experienced fly fishers and beginners of all ages, and offers an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for all. The day will be filled with various activities including fly tying demonstrations, casting clinics, guest speakers – Corina Jordan,

CEO of Fish & Game NZ, Kristina Placko, Fishing Guide with Stray South and Mason Court, Otago Fish & Game Officer, fishing equipment vendors, and of course, plenty of time for talking fishing. Equipment will be available for use and a team of experienced fly fishers will be on hand to offer guidance and advice.

For those new to the sport, it’s a great chance to learn about fly fishing in a supportive and encouraging environment. For those already acquainted with the sport, is an opportunity to share experiences, learn new techniques, and help inspire the next generation of women fly fishers. The Wakatipu Anglers are seeking more women members, but whether they choose to join the club or not, getting women into the sport is the primary goal.

Admission to the event is free and includes access to all activities, and a chance to win some great prizes!  Prizes include:  1 x whole season fishing licence prize voucher, a guided days fishing  with Kristina Placko from Stray South, assorted fly boxes and a pair of women’s waders not to mention quite a few more. All generously provided by Otago Fish & Game, Stray South, Manic Tackle and Patagonia.

Come join us on Saturday, 9 September 2023 for a day of fun, fishing, and camaraderie. Let’s celebrate the spirit of women in fly fishing and inspire more women to consider this wonderful sport. We look forward to seeing you there!
