THE CATALYST: People and Places - Rethinking New Zealand Histories

Apr 24, 2016 - 6:30pm

A new take on the cultural history of Otago and Southland will be presented by Professor Tony Ballantyne, described as New Zealand’s ‘most innovative historian’.

Professor Ballantyne, a world-leading historian of British colonialism, will explore the processes that shape places and the ways in which places imprint themselves onto people.

Prof Ballantyne

In a distinctive approach to New Zealand history, he will examine the importance of place in shaping communities and the sense of belonging that is important to both individuals and groups.

Drawing on examples – from early Bay of Islands mission stations to Gore, Central Otago’s ghost towns to South Dunedin – Professor Ballantyne will suggest some important new ways in which we might reimagine the histories of these islands.

Tony Ballantyne is a Professor of History at the University of Otago. He is the Director of the Centre for Research on Colonial Culture at the University of Otago, where he is also the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Humanities.

He is the author of five books and the editor or co-editor of six edited collections, and his most recent book is the award-winning Entanglements of Empire: Missionaries, Māori and the Question of the Body (Duke University Press and Auckland University Press). His ongoing research focuses on the cultural history of nineteenth-century Otago and Southland.
