ORC - COMMUNITY UPDATE 19 | JUNE 2022 I SHARING THE FINDINGS

Jun 3, 2022

Kia ora koutou
Thank you to those who came to the Otago Regional Council’s (ORC) online community meeting last night on Thursday 2 June, where we shared the findings of the two natural hazards reports looking at liquefaction, lateral spreading and flood hazards at the Head of Lake Wakatipu (Whakatipu-wai-Māori), including Glenorchy, Kinloch, and surrounding rural areas of the Dart and Rees Valleys.
We hope you had an opportunity to digest the information and ask questions. There is a lot to take in, and we understand that you will have more questions, some of which you may prefer to ask us directly. As well as having all the information available on our website, we will come to Glenorchy for in person meetings soon.

About the reports
The two investigations include a geotechnical investigation, by Tonkin + Taylor Ltd, looking at liquefaction and lateral spreading caused by a major earthquake (see image from this report below). The second, by Land River Sea Consulting Ltd, assessed the flood hazard on the Dart and Rees river floodplain, and high levels in Lake Wakatipu.
The detail modelling and analysis of these reports provide a much better understanding of the area’s natural hazards than previously known. They show that a moderate to major earthquake or flooding event will have severe impacts on the township and residents.
Having these findings better enables the community to move forward with an adaptation response. And we will continue to work with the local community to look at ways to adapt to these natural hazards.
The reports are to be endorsed by the ORC Data and Information Committee next week, 9 June. The full reports will be presented and the meeting will be live streamed on the ORC’s Youtube page. You can read the reports on the council agenda here (scroll to page 3) in the meantime.

ORC thanks the Glenorchy Community.

ORC would like to thank everyone in the Glenorchy community for their participation

and feedback during this process, and for attending meetings in the community, outlining this project and results.

We plan to hold more follow-up sessions; as many as needed, with the community throughout this next phase of the hazard adaptation process. These provide opportunities to discuss findings, and for ORC to listen to your feedback – we value your input.

Keep in touch

We are planning a follow-up community meeting in late June, early July in Glenorchy.

Please keep your eye on an upcoming newsletter for dates, or feel free to contact the ORC Natural Hazards Manager, Jean-Luc Payan, on 0800 474 082 or email us for more information at headofthelake@orc.govt.nz. This email will go to our Natural Hazards team, and we will provide responses to any emailed questions, and facilitate answers from our consultants if needed.
