THE SUFFRAGE COMMEMORATION BENCH AND PLANTINGS

In a quiet corner of the Village Green, a gorgeous wooden bench was unveiled in a typical Spring downpour, which seemed not to dampen the spirit of the event.

Big thanks to the GY Rural Women, most especially Elaine, for having had the good idea in the first place, Corrine and Ronda at Made in Glenorchy for producing a fabulous information panel, and the ladies of the Bench Committee (Ruth Ann, Katherine, Corrine, Ronda, and Elaine) for making it all happen.

Needless to say, Fearless Leader, Kate, led the charge and we loved having John Richards tell us the stories of his wonderful Valpy women ancestors who were original signers of the Suffrage Petition and cared for the future of this place. Visitors came from as far as St Bathans, Cromwell, and Tarras to join us for the day, too.

Our forebears would have been proud of the sturdy souls who braved the inclement weather to honour their sterling efforts in winning the vote for women back in the day. The commemorative camelias and the Fanny Peach tree appreciated the watering, and we hope it will have given them a good start to long and hopefully - in the case of the peach tree - fruitful lives.

Do use the space to reflect, give thanks and enjoy.
