NEW WHEELIE BINS UPDATE!

Mar 22, 2019

QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Finding houses with no numbers on the fence

Yes QLDC have alerted us and the contractors who are delivering the bins (Waste Management) to the challenges of properties that don't have numbers on the fences. In the database that they are using, each property has a GPS location which will help the team work out where to leave the bins. They will do their best for every property but it is likely that they will miss a few or put a few bins in the wrong spot. If this happens the best thing for people to do is call QLDC (03 441 0499) and let them know that their property been missed. Each bin has an RFID tag so they will be able to track down any bins that are in the wrong spot easily enough.

Can you keep your bins?

Yes you can. The new service doesn't start until 1st of July so you'll keep using blue bags and your old bin until then. If people don't want to keep their bins they can be dropped off to a collection point and they will be recycled in Christchurch. QLDC haven't 100% confirmed this but they are considering setting up a drop off point at the Glenorchy green waste for a few hours on a weekend after the 1st of July. The challenge with the green waste is that is unmanned so the drop off time would have to be limited which won't suit all residents. If you had any thoughts on a location where there would be enough space for up to 200 wheelie bins and someone around that would be happy to receive them do let us know. The other option is that people can drop them off to the transfer station in Frankton during opening hours.

From 1 July, our district is switching to a three wheelie bin system for recycling and rubbish so that:

  • we can say good-bye to single-use plastic bags
  • glass bottles and jars can be picked up in a separate bin and recycled across the district

Glenorchy will be one of the first areas to receive the bins

Bins will be delivered to all properties who get kerbside collections in the week starting 26th March

The new kerbside collections won’t start until 1 July, so don’t forget to keep using your old bins and blue bags until then

 When your bins arrive:

  • check that the street number on the bins match your house number. Each bin is tagged to a specific property
  • help out any absentee neighbours by taking their bins off the street
  • find somewhere to keep your new wheelie bins until the collection starts on 1 July

All general enquiries about the service can be directed to services@qldc.govt.nz or 03 441 0499.
