IMPROVING RESILIENCE & COMMUNICATION

Sep 23, 2018

Following the prolonged road closure and power outage this week, the following information might be of interest.

1. Emergency Generator

This should have been operational by now but there has been a problem with the fuel pumps. It is scheduled to be operational by end October.

2. Communications

I have passed a request to Otago Civil Defence that Glenorchy Motors be listed as a prime point of contact for sending information to as they are the centre of the town and have generator back up.

I have requested that we receive regular updates - even if it is just a report that there is no new information.

Because our local radio does not operate in a power outage and internet etc at home may not be accessible the GCA suggests all residents with cell phones sign up to the QLDC text alert service at https://www.qldc.govt.nz/council-online/online-forms/text-alerts/ Council can send Glenorchy specific information to you that way.

3. Opening rural roads.

I have requested, via Civil Defence, that contractors be pre-authorised with instructions to inspect and clear rural roads as soon as it is apparent that there are treefalls likely to have blocked them. There were individuals trapped at Greenstone and Routeburn and residents at Paradise/Arcadia have no real way of knowing what is happening.
